50K Finisher!

5 hrs 46 min to cover 31.1 miles. Saturday was my first 50km run. The 20th Century Ultra started at Garcia Station, a former stop along the Iron Horse trail near I-90. It followed the Iron Horse trail down to RattleSnake Lake and then took the Snoqualmie Valley Trail to Tolt-Macdonald park in Carnation. Most of the running was on old railroad grade turned to hike/bike trail. It was a pretty day, with temps in the mid 60's and only a little bit of rain.
While the tread of the course was very monotonous, the route was pretty much slightly downhill the whole way. Overall, I felt pretty good with the usual sore knees and arches.
Highlight was definitely running into an old Philmont friend at one of the rest stations.

Takeaways, need some trail running gaiters to keep pebbles out of the shoes. Need to explore more food options, after 20 miles or so bananas and other quick snacks stop being interesting. Need to work gatorade or other sport drinks into my onboard hydration system.

Huge Thanks to Stephanie and Bill for showing up here and there on the course to cheer me on.

Aunt Lucy and Cora come to Visit

Bill and his Daddy are enjoying having Lucy and Cora visit this weekend. We took them on a walk in the greenspace near our house. Technically, it is the West Duwamish Green Belt, or maybe SkyWay greenbelt. We ran into a couple of the Earth Corps people working there.

Later we went to Colman Pool for some swimming. It is an incredibly beautiful day. Mid-70's, views of the mountains, water, a whole bunch of families swimming in the pool. Bill refuses to take his nap, for fear of missing something.

Back in the saddle again

Well the weekend is over. Bill had a great time spending time with his grandmother. So did we. We went to Lucy's graduation down in Eugene. Bill did great with all the time in the car. He was a real trooper. He soaked up all the attention.

He slept pretty well last night with only getting up around 4:30, unless I slept through it. Then he got up around 6:30 or so again. So now I'm downstairs with him and the saucer while Mom gets a rest. He sure seems to have developed alot over the weekend. Just the way he looks and listens to things in his house. And he is playing harder with his toys. He's a little dude.

Broken obelisk being renovated

This sculpture exists in three locations in the world, I've lived in two of them. It is a very thought inspiring piece, and one of my favorites. It's a neat coincidence that it has shown up in two big parts of my life.

First Hike in the Desert

Today, we took Bill for his first real hike. Sure, it took 3 stops instead of one to get there but it was pretty cool.
The weather was nice and sunny, and with temps in the low 80's starting out we were sweltering. Luckily, after a siesta under some trees some clouds blocked the sunlight a little and the wind cooled things off.

We were constantly on the lookout for rattlesnakes as we enjoyed the small Umtanum creek walk. We heard and barely saw a little one that scurried away quickly.

Bill did great in his backpack. Dad had to jog back a 1/2 mile to find his blue hat on the way back.

Bill was a real trooper and didn't want to go to bed tonight even though he was completely exhausted.

Umm, porter...where is my porter?

I distinctly ordered a porter on my pre-trip signup sheet.
